Activities
Research
Our basic research in pharmacology/toxicology and behavioral research serves to discover and characterize target molecules and signaling pathways for new drugs. Promising molecular targets are investigated and evaluated at various levels of biological complexity (from cells to animals) in order to launch the initial phases of drug development. In food toxicology, we focus on risk assessment of new technologies in the field of nutrition.
Teaching
The institute offers research-based and problem-oriented teaching in various areas of pharmacology and toxicology. We conduct lectures, interactive seminars, and courses at the bachelor's, master's, graduate, and postgraduate levels. Main topics include the pharmacological basis of therapy, general toxicology, clinical veterinary pharmacology and toxicology, neurobiology, genome dynamics, carcinogenesis, and food toxicology.
Services
The core component of our consulting service is an internet-based decision support tool for pharmacotherapy and clinical toxicology in animals (CliniPharm/CliniTox). With CliniPharm, we aim to predict the results of pharmacotherapy based on the latest scientific findings. This decision support tool also assists veterinarians in the responsible use of antibiotics and in the individual treatment of problem patients. CliniTox offers an electronic advisory service for the management of poisoning in animals.
